money making quandry - suggestions?

I have decided to clean house a bit, and figure out how to sell items and not donate them ALL. Some will still be donated, but I want to at least try to sell first.

I have a bunch of evening gowns and a bunch of books, off the top of my head, that I think are saleable. I should have done the dresses during prom season, but wedding season may ( Read more... )

I don't have much experience selling stuff. A friend made a mint selling stuff he didn't want any more (mostly books and CDs) through eBay, which does not help you. (He also had a postage meter.) FYI - if you just had a scale, you could print your own postage and request pickup of packages. You'd never have to go to the post office! The possibly difficult part would be getting packing materials. Anyway, I know you didn't want to go that route, but I can't help putting in my two cents.

Of your other choices, I think that craigslist might be a good option. You could first respond to other wanted queries, and if that doesn't work, post your items for sale. You can name the pickup terms. If you're not comfortable saying where you live, you could always find a nearby location or a place on your way to/from work. When I sold my last car, I met the guy at the grocery store up the street.

Good luck!

ok, duh. That's a great idea I didn't think of - meeting someone in a public place to do the exchange of money/goods. Thank you!

Since I will not be continually selling goods (at least I don't think so) the ebay/amazon option probably wouldn't be worth the time and effort anyway, without the other hinderances. However, when I sign up for swap.com I'll probably end up doing some of this anyway. But that's going to be smaller stuff at the media postage rate, and I can print postage here too. (as soona s I get some more ink for my home printer! LOL!) I'll keep in mind the package pickup option. Thanks for reminding me!

I have just published my first poem as a Yahoo!Contributor! Woo Hoo!

I hope to do more, so be sure to visit. Right now, I only get paid based on visits, until I get motivated to do articles. Wish me luck!

Put links so we can visit!

But yeah, I quite empathise with the "ebay hasn't worked for me, what now?! feeling and I'm hoping other people come up with fab answers. (I'm going certainly to check out swap.com!)

are there consigment shops anywhere near you? I believe there's also craigslist in the UK.

I sent out invites for the new Yahoo thingy. My one submission hasn't been accepted yet - I think it takes 24-48 hours. I'll send links when I get something published!

I am not allowed to do pick ups at work (I AM the reception desk! So it would be especially bad if I broke that rule! LOL!), but it had occured to me.

I like rinabeana's idea of meeting people in a public place. Since I live in a small city, it would be pretty easy. I just want to find the right place to Sell the stuff! I don't want to rely only on craigslist.

Ah well, at least I have some motivation again.
