YAY found it! Recipe for homemade fabric refresher/odor remover and other frugal things...

2 different recipes, essentially the same. Gonna try these as soon as I use up my current bottles of Febreze. Both are reported to test out fine on most fabrics (would use caution on suede or suede-like couches/chairs)

Recipe 1.

1 spray bottle (why not use the old fabric refresher bottle?)
1/2 cap to 1 capful of liquid fabric softener (ultra strength ( Read more... )

Will try this, recipe two sounds like it might be good? but less baking soda? I buy losts of spray stuff, so it might cut down a bit.

The baking soda is, in my opinion what eliminates the odor and the fabric softener just adds scent. But I can't help thinking that, unless you use hot water to dissolve that much baking soda thoroughly, the whole mixture will be too think. Then again, the people who posted these swear they've tested them out.

I had some t-shirts of Ken's recently that I had washed twice but they still held a musty smell. I put them in a sink full of water with one cup of baking soda and soaked them for a few hours. The smell was completely gone once they were dry. Baking soda is also my standard "washing powder" when cleaning up vomit - works a treat :).

baking soda is my cleaner of choice for just about everything, which is why I want to get rid of and stop buying other stuff. These recipes are intended for use on fabric couches and chairs and curtains and stuff though. For laundry, I'd definitely add baking soda to the wash - we actually have a brand here that is made with baking soda - cheaper and cleaner, so I may switch to buying that from now on.

I like that site. Thanks! I buy the fabric softener sheets and not the liquid.

I used to buy the sheets, until I realised they were worse for the environment and the cost was about the same.

If you wanted to make the spray just to eliminate odors, then leave out the fabric sofener and just use water and baking soda. One recipe actually said you could use hair conditioner instead of fabric softener, but I can't figure that one out...
