"Also, I think knives are a good idea. Big, fuck-off shiny ones. Ones that look like they could skin a crocodile. Knives are good, because they don't make any noise, and the less noise they make, the more likely we are to use them. Shit 'em right up. Makes it look like we're serious. that afflicts London's teenage population

And to a large extent specifically London's: an unscientific Google search for "stabbed to death" on .uk sites produced a big majority of hits from London. Apparently in Manchester you're twice as likely to be shot as stabbed; not that that's any better! But knife crime is definitely strongly associated with London over other big cities, whereas gun crime is not. Any ideas why that might be?

I heard that stat about Manchester on TV the other day... scary innit! It is interesting how knife crime seems more strongly associated here than gun crime. I wonder if it has anything to do with the extra media spotlight on teen stabbings here even though the numbers put it in perspective: there have been 19 teen stabbings in Greater London this year, but there are more than 250 stabbings a year across the country and there has also been a 19% increase in nation-wide stabbings the past 5 years. Moreover, according to a report by The Policy Exchange think-tank, there are more than 60,000 muggings around the country at knifepoint annually, and more than half of the young victims of knife crime do not report it to the police and 45% do not even tell their parents ( ... )
