I wonder how much of the difference in demographics that you're encountering is due not so much to differences between Montréal and London, but to differences between university alumni and general population (or whatever portion thereof your current job dictates)?

Do you think there'd be less divergence in demographics if I'd spoken to the general population in Montreal or university alumni in London?

Well alumni of McGill in North America are unlikely to be recent immigrants from Africa, if nothing else.
