Fur-trader James would not be amused...

Two recently notorious events have dragged the highly-reputed university that I attend into the national spotlight.

Last month there was a major uproar after an 18-year-old freshman football player publicly alleged that he had been hazed by senior players (i.e. sexually assaulted). Hazing is considered to be an initiation activity carried out by ( Read more... )

I don't know why administrations allow hazing. They always seem to turn a blind eye until somebody threatens prison charges, and then they turtle and try to cover-up the whole thing. Some guys at my school did the anal broomstick thing and took pictures (which ended up being some pretty damning evidence in court). Since the victim was 17 (minor) and they were 18 (adults) they went to jail for felony sexual assault of a minor. They managed to plea bargain and only get 2-3 years each (which I think was too low). being convicted felons, I'm guessing they have a hard time landing decent jobs. how exactly do you say 'well ya I sexually assaulted a guy with a broomstick for fun so can I work in the next cube over?'

Shit, that's very similar to what happened here except I don't think there was any photo evidence. Damning indeed what must've taken place in that court!

Ye know in the immediate aftermath of the incident and McGill admin's poor response I spoke to a few alumni who didn't give any gifts (even though they had been regular donors) because of it. Then immediately after the recent decision a couple alumni even congratulated McGill for taking some action and were more enthusiastic to continue their giving.

Funny is the ways of the world.

i'm glad they didn't give shit (well except the fact that it sucks for you) but seriously, this is exactly why mcgill will NEVER get a penny from me.

the administration is disgusting and corrupt, and i'm surprised they've managed to hide it so well all these years. well, now we made it to the front page of the gazette with our sleaziness.

That whole hazing incident is despicable.

I can't believe that the four captains denied the whole thing. (See what Radio Canada wrote about it.)

I wonder if it is really a good idea to cancel the rest of the football season. Isn't that part of the reason that students are reluctant to report this kind of thing? I noticed in the Radio Canada article, that the student quit the team and quit McGill. Was he afraid of the way students and teachers were going to treat him? Some people will blame him for the cancellation of the football season.

Football teams have always believed themselves to be above the law - in this case the state law and at a highschool level, they've been found to partake serious breach of school rules and general ethics just to get their way and be competitive.

It's very unfortunate for the victim to have left McGill but he did the right thing to bring the incident to the open because even without enough media penetration, it's blatantly obvious that practices like these and other similar ones are taking place all over universities in North America.

I'm really fucking disturbed by how McGill handled this hazing incident. There seem to be very few consequences for those who were responsible. Don't they understand that this is sexual assault?? Imagine if these were girls who had been 'probed' by a broomstick, and what a shock that would be... why should it be any different because the people assaulted were men? Grrrrr.

Also disgusted by McGill girls posing for Playboy. I'm pretty sure that they'll regret it when the magazine comes out and they get harassed on campus by all sorts of assholes (you know it's going to happen). Way to pose for a magazine that's extremely negative towards women's sexuality and will almost definitely photoshop you! Way to do it not for your own pleasure, but to get the attention of drooling frat boys! Way to perpetuate the idea that women's bodies are simply there to be consumed by horny men! GRRRR!

I wonder how much they get paid for that compared to how much the usual playgirls get paid?

What a great point! Damn, I never thought of it that way.

Way to perpetuate the idea that women's bodies are simply there to be consumed by horny men!
Definitely valid points. I think some of them will regret it but the world we live in, thanks to the help of the mainstream corporate media, proft-maximizing marketing teams and lack of influence by the opposite spectrum, they're able to get away with it so easily. Most, if not all the girls who posed nude remind me of the game Lemmings.

The football thing is definetely disgusting. Its funny, Victor Feret (3 years ago he was a rookie in the basketball team), told me that their initiation was also humiliating and involved nudity and... vaseline... but they never went into more disgusting stuff like anal probes and stuff.

As for Playboy... its their body and their choice so why worry that some ass holes will chase them on campus? Maybe this is what they wanted in the first place. I am definetely gonna buy that issue and I will be proud that my univ is in the Top 10 in North America. (if not academically, at least women-wise). Plus McGill cannot really do anything against it as long as the girls do not wear any McGill artifacts on their naked bodies (like the logo tatooed... u know where). Plus recruiting was off-campus... so its all cool.

Victor - the guy from Molson? The 4.0 dude? Cuz that's really disturbing but hardly surprising...

Yeh man, I'm gonna buy a copy of that Playboy as well. :)
