Your analysis of the government of Turkey and Malaysia (Islam's Happy Faces, Jan 3) was interesting. Turkey may have a Muslim majority but, as you say, it is a nation where Islam has been tightly suppressed and controlled by the state for the last 70 years. For the most part it's been a very tolerant place, both historically and at present. The major problems exist between extremist Hindu and Muslim elements, and some extremist Hindu and Christian missionaries. They make up a minority of the population, but there have been occasions when tensions have flared up and resulted in inter-religious violence, such as what happened in Gujarat in 2002 and Bombay in 1993 ( ... )
