A wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and this year was the best ever for several reasons this year.

First and foremost, and likely the most momentous thing I have ever posted here, GFWTR and I are expecting our first child. We announced it at Thanksgiving to our families’ to much excitement and surprise. I am pretty sure both of our parents had ( Read more... )

I'm hoping for a she but fully expecting a he. Yes it would be better if they take after GFWTR more than me.

"Nice Rack!" what the same thing GFWTR texted me on my phone after I mailed a picture to her that day.

Good one! Is your prey-takedown autopilot a result of your home-defense training, perhaps?

Maybe next year I'll start doing some hunting of my own. I'm really attached to the idea of cheap meat that I know is healthy.

I think the autopilot mode came from all the practical shooting (pistol and 3-gun) I have done over the last three years. We occasionally do moving targets in matches and that has no doubt helped. All the sporting clays I use to shoot no doubt help with the moving target aspect also. But the practical pistol has really given me the autopilot mode. I know I am shooting really well at a match when the stages feel almost like I am watching it third person.

The initial investment in gear makes hunting expensive to get into but once you have the gear the meat does get very reasonable. I think I got between 60-70lbs of meat off this years buck and it cost me $80 to have a butcher, butcher and package the meat. I am sure that if you took all the cost associated (ammo, replacement gear, time, gas money, etc) with hunting and added them up the price per lbs is not great but all the fringe benefits to hunting I find more than offset the costs.

Oh, and the children. THE CHILDREN!

Congratulations. You'll be fine. There is never, ever a "right" or "best" time to have a kid. You just do it. And everything turns out fine.

In case you haven't heard, John and Kim had their baby on Wednesday of last week. West Alexander Mathews.

Thanks, I also think we'll do pretty good at this whole parent thing but at the same time there is a lot of new things to learn and take care of. I am looking forward to it more and more.
