Character(s): Mal/River
Set: #3
Prompt: #8 27
Summary: Mal's counting the days...

27 days.

Mal counted again.

27 days.

Was that really possible? Just one more count.

27 days.

He hadn’t talked to River in 27 days.

How could that be? How could he have gone so long without talking to her? How could it be that she had gone to being his closest confidante to a stranger in 27 days? He almost never saw her, either. She took the flight shift from Zoe, and it was always on autopilot when he woke up in the morning to pick up his flight shift. He never saw her in the mess hall, either, so he wasn’t sure when she was eating. Any time he went into the containment bay, he looked up at the catwalks, but River was never there. Occasionally he caught just a glimpse of her skirt and hair as she turned the corner down a hallway, but other than that, it was like River had disappeared.

27 days.

“Sir?”

Mal looked up from the calendar, to where Zoe stood in his doorway. “Yeah,” he said.

She stood with her hands behind her. “Sir, I’ve checked the cargo. 27 boxes, all ready to be delivered.”

27, huh? That was probably a bad sign.

“Thank you, Zoe,” he said. “I’ll be right there.”

She nodded, her eyes full of unasked questions. She bowed slightly, then dismissed herself. Mal stared after her. He knew that she and the rest of the crew were miserable and terrified to be around him anymore, but he couldn’t help it. He felt like his nerves were just shot, they were non-existant. If something felt wrong, it was like the world was ending.

He was a damn fool.

Mal grabbed his jacket and strode out of the room. He walked out to the containment bay. Zoe was already waiting for him, along with Jayne. Together the three of them walked outside, to where they were to meet the Dimone Brothers.

All 27 of them.

Mal eyed the men warily. If they started firing, the Serenity crew wouldn’t stand a chance. He greeted the Dimone Brothers, and as they handed over the cash, the men climbed aboard Serenity and started removing the cargo. The entire transaction went smoothly, which Mal was grateful for. He wasn’t sure who he would kill if something had gone wrong.

When they were safely aboard Serenity, he went straight for the cockpit. Zoe lifted them out into space, while Mal scanned the computer for jobs.

He found 27 matches.

It was starting to get a little creepy.

He left the cockpit, walking along the hallway back to his room. Kaylee intercepted him, looking hesitant and scared to have to talk to him. His heart ached for the look on her face, but he just didn’t have the strength to make her feel better.

“Cap’n?” she asked slowly. “We’re down to exactly 27 containers of spork ‘fore we’re outta food.”

Of course there were 27 containers. There were 27 of everything else, too.

“Fine,” he muttered flatly, then walked into his room and shut the door.

“I got it,” he growled to the silence of the bedroom. “27 days. Now leave me alone!”

Has anyone else had issues with LiveJournal today? Mine's been tweaking--IE keeps shutting it down every time I try to update! Ordinarily I will respond to each person who writes me individually (i.e., not here) but since it's shutting down each time, I'm going to take this slim window to update the story and respond to your comments!

First of all--THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS!!! They really do keep me excited about writing. I appreciate them more than you guys can possibly imagine! Thank you for taking the time. It means a lot to me. I'm glad you guys are enjoying it! I haven't written anything in a really long time (like, years) so this has been a wonderful thing to come into, especially with your support! So thank you! You guys keep reading, and I'll keep writing! THANK YOU!!!
