For the last couple months I've felt like I'm back at Mudd taking about six credits of algorithms and combinatory logic. My mom bought me Algorithms in a Nutshell, Statistics in a Nutshell, and Real World Haskell (highly recommended!) for Christmas and I've been working through them on the bus to and from work. Then my copy of To Mock a Read more... )

It's very good. I had no real stats knowledge before. Half of one semester of a freshman math class was on probability and statistics, and I'd forgotten it all by now. I believe the later chapters include some practical tips in R and other software packages, which I notice you've been looking into. You can read the book free online through the Seattle Public Library's Safari subscription (or if Google has a subscription for employees).

projecteuler.net and a Haskell compiler got me through a visit to the in-laws a while back. The trouble I found was that it never encouraged me to write anything in Haskell longer than what was essentially a one-liner with an integer answer; any time it called for real data handling or more elaborate output, I turned to python.
