Author's Choice - Stupidest thing you've done/6-3-10 prompt (6 of 100) mbeancntr June 4 2010, 23:12:25 UTC
“So, explain this ‘Mockingbird’ thing,” Mike hinted evilly.

Aurora’s cheeks colored. “Take alcohol, a Karaoke machine, the Carly Simon/James Taylor duet, add my partner and me, and hit blend.”

“But that song? It’s…annoying.”

“Not when we’re singing it,” she argued.

“How drunk were you?”

“Apparently enough to lose my rational mind.” A pause. “What I don’t understand is why no one lets me live it down but forgets about Peter’s participation. We gave quite the performance.”

“Darling, from my observation, you can be quite territorial when it comes to negotiating. And, no man could ever talk as much as you.”

“What about your nom de guerre?”

He crossed his arms. “Tell me how you think Reaper came about.”

“Honestly? Considering your expert marksmanship, I’m leaning toward the Grim Reaper.”

“Would that bother you?”

“No. I’ve seen you work. You may not like the additional time it takes for me to try to talk our HT out of his self-created crisis, but I’ve noticed that you don’t want to make that final shot unless you have to.”

He nodded and then smiled slyly. “Think about my last name.”

She started to laugh. “Of course. When you ‘Harvest’ something, you reap it.”

"Sit down, Michael." The patriarch of the Knolls family fished out a cigarette from his shirt pocket while Mike took a seat beside him. "Want a smoke?"

Reluctant to refuse the man’s offer, he accepted. “I quit after the Marines, but one won’t hurt me.”

“No, but my wife will have you back to a pack a day.”

“I understand. She’s worried.”

“It’s a little more than that. Not only is her daughter in a coma, but she’s also pregnant and not married.”

Mike paled. “It was unplanned.”

“No excuses. You’re both adults. I know you’ll do the right thing.”

Her childhood would have never prepared her for a career in hostage negotiation. She always looked at the world through rose-colored glasses and thought the singing birds were signs of how happy and joyful the world around her was. When her parents sent her away to college, she learned how to become sensible, logical, responsible, and practical. The world could be dependable, clinical, intellectual, and yes, a little cynical.

But, the questions multiplied until she got lost. It took her professor - a liaison for the FBI - to open her eyes, guide her, and tell her who she was.

"Do you have the target in your sights?" Mike asked. Getting her to the shooting range had been like pulling teeth. He was sure she was a pacifist and only fired her gun in order to prevent having to be recertified.

"Yes." A tiny smirk played on her lips. "Would you like me to fire? Or perhaps you'd like to squeeze the trigger for me?"

Her words interrupted his concentration. "I'm being serious, darling."

"Then so am I." She fired her round. "Happy?" The dumbfound expression on his face pleased her. "Didn't know I could hit the bull's-eye did you?"
