Oh, say can you see

It's Canada Day, and that means . . . fireworks. At the neighbors. On both sides. I still can't get used to the idea of it being legal, having been raised where it was a crime to set them off. Needless to say that the cats and the alpacas are not very happy about this particular part of the holiday. Poor babies ( Read more... )

Thanks! It's been a down week; sometimes posting or commenting wears me out. AI diseases suck hugely. But I'm trying to do better, see?

BTW, I've been meaning to ask: any ill effects from Malcolm eating a whole tube of toothpaste? Still as mischievous as ever?

I'm sorry!! I'm glad you're feeling better, though.

No, Malcolm is fine. It was ayurvedic toothpaste which helped, but he really seems to have a stomach of iron. Seriously, he's eaten chocolate, plastic, toothpaste, a pound of strawberries, soap, and a jar of lettuce seeds and suffered no ill effects. Mind you, this was all supposed to be well out of his reach but he's a very tall/long dog when he wants to me!

I've had this open for like, ten minutes, because I really wanted to respond properly to how that line about the heron in the tree made me feel. But I can't quite find the right words.

But I sometimes feel like that.

I hope I can get a picture for you. He was out there this morning again, but I hadn't brought my camera with me.

It is an iconic image, isn't it?

I agree. She led such a courageous fight against her cancer, and it was all brushed aside for the circus sideshow that Jackson had become.

He's still a young bird; I'd say he'd come up to my waist if we were standing next to each other. He flies up to one of the pines that has a lot of room and he crouches. I can't see him being able to do that for too much longer, and he doesn't stay there that long. The adults would either fly off altogether or sometimes they'd land on the barn roof. It'll be interesting to see what this one ends up doing.

In Quebec we don't set fireworks off for any reason. Especially not Canada Day, heh. Typically, on July 1, people round up their friends to help them move apartments and then get drunk. So hearing the fireworks still annoys me. On Victoria Day too. :)

Especially not Canada Day,

Ha! Now that you mention it, I can understand why :) So does the province celebrate Bastille Day instead?

I'm not a big fan of local fireworks, although I do love the big professional displays. I was once in a crowd when some asshat started throwing little cherry bombs around randomly. Really put me off the little local gatherings.

They celebrate the province's patron saint day, St. Jean Baptiste (John the Baptist). June 24. Montreal does have an int'l fireworks competition over the water every summer! Lots of awesome professional fireworks.

edited for clarity.
