Dr. Tiller, a gynecologist in Kansas who ran one of the only clinics in the US where women could get late-term abortions, was murdered today. I have been pregnant twice, and had two healthy kids. Oh my. I have a close friend who considered using his services. Additional genetic tests suggested she didn't have to, but there wasn't enough time for the additional tests before the cut-off here in Massachusetts and most places. I don't know what she would have done if going to him hadn't been an option, but it might well have been an under-the-wire abortion here -- that's the decision she was contemplating when we realized she could go to him if she needed to.

So his existence, and his service, means that there's a healthy little girl in the world.

Oh ow. I'm sure he knew his life was at risk -- I did -- and I've long honored his decision to keep going anyway. But ow.
