Grady had been enjoying the quiet, but he had known this was coming, and it was far better to take care of things now than when the others would be around. Perhaps seeing what happened to this girl would dissuade them from further resistance- but then again, it probably wouldn't.

The Irish cop opened the door with a cheerful smile on his face. "And how c'n I help ye, miss Nagato?"

She didn't blink. Her words emerged in their usual monotone, though perhaps spoken slightly louder than was usual for her. "You may answer my questions truthfully. I do not desire to speak to Officer Grady, police chief of Mayfield. I desire to speak to the one who input these words."

Her lips blurred as she handed a small hand mirror silently to the policeman. A rather odd thing to do. Then . . . a carefully preserved memory began to reproduce itself on the clear surface.

jesus christ

>all: DO NOT PANIC I HAVE THIS UNDER CONTROL

" . . . Do you understand?"

For just a single moment, what might register as surprise seems to flit across Grady's piggish eyes.

"Well!" he replied cheerfully. "'fraid I have no idea what this gobbleydegook means. And, really, a young lady like yerself shouldn't be bothering with foul language like this. Who knows what kind of horrible influence it could have on yer tender little mind?"

The police chief beamed. "I think y'should be hopping along home right about now, don't you?"

"I see. That is how it shall be . . . "

She took the mirror back into her hands and half-turned, almost as if she was actually going to listen to the man.

"Listen. Do not respond. Regardless of the outcome of what follows, this body will no longer be Nagato Yuki by tomorrow morning. I am presently uncertain if it has ever been Nagato Yuki at all, or only a flawed reconstruction. That does not matter. The flaw is what matters. It no longer serves its purpose. A faulty interface has no reason to exist.

"You may already understand. But it is important . . . I wish for you to understand." There was barely a pause before she turned back, her eyes showing no sign of any underlying emotion. "Emergency mode. Dissolution factors ready. All offensive data -- activation."
