[The funny thing about the nuclear apocalypse is that it never really ends. In the real world, there is no climactic moment wherein the problem is solved and the world begins to heal. In the real world, there is no magical reset button that makes everything the way it was before. If you think about it, really, you died the moment those buttons were pushed and the missiles were launched. Everything since then hasn't been living- it's just been about surviving.
Thankfully, however, this is not the real world. This is Mayfield: and here in Mayfield, it is about living. It's about second chances; it's about a new life, making new friends, surrounded by people you love, in a world where nothing can hurt you. The world outside, the world you came from; they are wretched, broken places, places unfit for anyone to inhabit. Mayfield, on the other hand...
Mayfield is a better place to live.
Maybe you'll remember that on midnight of the third day, when the nuclear wasteland is gone; vanished in the blink of an eye, like awakening from a bad dream. In its place is Mayfield, quiet suburbia, the birds chirping and the grass as green as ever. There are no vicious cannibals here- only drone children playing in the streets. And in place of the bleak brown clouds that made up the sky only moments ago, the sun shines high amidst a blue, cloudless sky. Your friends are all alive again, your regains restored, and it's almost as though the past three days never happened at all.
But maybe you can't forget it that easily. Maybe you'll remember, every now and then, how it felt to see the corpses piling up while the world burned away before your eyes. Maybe you'll remember the howls of the cannibals, already succumbed to the base instincts that civilized society once held in check. Maybe you'll remember what it was like to live, however briefly, in a dying world.
And maybe, just maybe, when next year's Thanksgiving rolls around... you'll be thankful you don't have to.]
