event: it came from the dairy aisle

[At 11:59 PM on Saturday, there's a loud whirring sound in the sky. One of the spaceships wobbles and then crashes dramatically to earth, landing just outside Mayfield near the entrance to the highway ( Read more... )

...yeah, not happening.

[Way too many opportunities for embarrassment here. This is Caesar, turning to sneak off without picking out any costume at all.]

You should have fun! Dressing up is usually what one does to enjoy themselves for human culture right?

Unfortunately. [But everyone looks so silly...] I'm not really a fan of it, myself.

You don't like dressing up? This is my first time enjoying a human Holiday, but I find it lots of fun. Everyone gets together to dress up together!

It's pretty childish, so it's fine if a kid like you gets into the whole 'dress up' thing.

[He says this as people clearly far older than even he is are finding their own costumes around them. Of course.]

We don't really have a holiday like this where I'm from, anyway.

How old are you? I didn't know you had to be a certain age before dressing up isn't acceptable.

We don't really have one either! We don't have most human holidays though.

Seventeen. [And that he's picking up a nearby hat to look at is only due to being stuck here talking to Aradia. Besides, looking doesn't really count.] We usually have seasonal festivals. That's about it. I guess this counts as a Fall festival, though...

Festivals? What is a festival like? Is it like a party? Would it be like a funeral? [She is pretty sure funerals are parties.]

Lots of decorations around town, markets, dancing, a lot of food. I guess you could say people dress up, though not in costumes like these.

[Funerals... He shakes his head.]

No. Funerals are usually all somber and dull. Festivals are the opposite of that.

That sounds like a lot of fun! Do you think they'll have festivals here then?

I thought funerals were corpse parties or something. I never got to really ask anyone what they were.

Corpse parties?

[Here, Aradia. Have a cowboy hat, since he sure isn't going to put it on his own head.]

That sounds terribly morbid. And unless someone decides to throw a festival outside of the town's holidays, you may not be lucky enough to see a decent one. All the holidays here tend to end up being deadly.

Yes. Corpse parties. Many of my friends died back home, and I thought having a funeral for them would be nice.

[She likes her Indiana Jones hat. :(]

But this one doesn't seem deadly at all? Just silly.

[She can have the Indiana Jones hat back after he's tried it on. Hat switch! He'll give it back in a moment, honest, because he isn't dressing up. Nope.]

Your friends...? [Oh, well, now he feels like a jerk for taking her hat. You shouldn't take hats from girls with dead friends.] Sometimes the town plays pranks instead of killing people.

Well, funerals are... I guess they don't have to be dull, but most of the time everyone wears black and talk about who the deceased were to them.

[She'll jam the cowboy hat on and look into the mirror. This hat is pretty cool!]

They're alive here though! It's kind of nice that all my friends are here. And it's a lot better then where we were before apparently. But I guess it makes sense. We don't stay dead here, and we're not being pursued by something that wants us all dead.

That doesn't sound too exciting! People shouldn't get down about death! [She says this so cheerfully.]

[And this hat is not half bad, either.]

What part of this room did you find this kind of hat...? [Fedoras win all.] Huh. Sounds like everything sucked where you came from. I guess that puts you in the minority who wants to stay in Mayfield?

And yeah, funerals aren't meant to be exciting. It's because people don't like to be reminded that they could be next in the coffin.

[Cheerful is weird for this sort of conversation, but who's he to question it? She can be happy if she wants to be.]

Uh. I don't know! I just found it with the rest of this outfit! It wasn't too bad. I was okay with it. And I had a lot to do even after I stopped being okay with things and was more proactive!

People shouldn't worry so much about dying! There isn't enough time for that. We have plenty of things we can do instead of lamenting about dying.

[The most optimistic. She does it.]
