I'm so glad you were able to enjoy it. My dad also traumatized me with Star Trek early in life, but I've grown to appreciate it.

The white-washing of Khan didn't bother me much because Khan in the original series is supposed to be Middle Eastern, but no one was willing to part with Ricardo Montalban's fabulous accent. So yeah, he has always just been an ethnically confused guy.

And I think Kirk is supposed to be something of a douchebag. Not my favorite character either, but it works with their story.

Actually, they feel like using Ricardo Montalban like in the old Hollywood for anything "exotic" in the first place. And I'm not even mad for that (much). Probably they would've believed better if it was The Rock or something. >>;;
"Ethnically confused guy" sums it up. And he had an accent anyway. So whatever.

And I know Kirk is an archetype on his own but ugh.
