Entertaining Angels Soundtrack

Dec 10, 2008 13:31

So, jya_bd_cp_ttgb suggested having a soundtrack. And I started thinking about it. This is just a preliminary thing, just the ones I could find in my still-decimated iTunes. Feel free to suggest more!

ETA: Oh, and if you click the link to open a new window, and also sign in to imeem, you can listen to all full tracks instead of some of the songs only having thirty-second clips. ::glares in annoyance at embedded player::

ETA2: Still rearranging and adding, still a work in progress. Thanks, everyone!

ETA3: I'm pretty happy with this now, though I won't refuse another suggestion that strikes me as perfect for the story. :) I think it has a good mix now of emo and happy and sweet and goofy, with just a little touch of religion here and there. Kinda like the fic. And the show.

Entertaining Angels by Newsboys

One to another, the feelings in between
I won't let go
Of all you taught me, all right
Close as a brother, the way we used to be
I hold my breath
And I wait for you to breathe

Of course this song was in my head a lot when I first started writing this story, though it didn't inspire so much as inform me. Somehow I forgot it for awhile, but here it is again!

Dead Man (Carry Me) by Jars of Clay

So carry me
I’m just a dead man lying on the carpet can’t find a heartbeat
Make me breathe
I wanna be a new man tired of the old one out with the old plan

This song makes me think of Dean fighting against the numbness that weighs him down, his longing for freedom from the awful things inside. And how he just needs someone to help him, right now, someone to carry him for a little while.

Good Man by Burlap to Cashmere

Don’t you see he’s falling away?
Thank God for the love that you gave
Only love can put out the fire
And your love was calling him higher and higher

He was a good man, he lived a good life, but he was dying for some love, so thank God you came along and helped him.

Calling All Angels by Train

When there is no place safe and no safe place to put my head
When you feel the world shake from the words that are said

Oh man, how did I not know that this song exists? It's perfect! (Suggested by just_ruth.)

Can’t Stop Falling by Great Big Sea

Oh no, I can’t stop falling
My heart betrays me
And I know I'll start to feel it all again
Won’t someone save me?

Okay, this one’s kind of a joke. Castiel can’t help falling.

New Soul by Yael Naim

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take

This song has a very upbeat feeling, a very childlike and curious air to it. It feels very appropriate for a human Castiel, new to the world, trying to figure out how things work. I love it. ::hugs the song:: (Suggested by aberglaube.)

Calling Out Your Name by Rich Mullins

Well the moon moved past Nebraska
And spilled laughter on them cold Dakota hills
And angels danced on Jacob's stairs
Yeah, they danced on Jacob's stairs

This song is all about Castiel’s wonder with the natural world, his fascination with beauty, his reverence for God’s creation.

Haven by Enter the Haggis

Fire in the fading moon
Fire in the afternoon
Fire will come and take me soon
Take me from the crossroads

Dean’s memories are not kind to him.

Set Me Free by Casting Crowns

All alone with my demons I am
Who is this man that comes my way?
The dark ones shriek
They scream His name
Is this the One they say will set the captives free?

A little too overtly religious to fit Dean really well, but I like the feel of this song. Very strong and emotional. (Suggested by echo_grace_07.)

Lullaby by Creed

Hush my love now don't you cry
Everything will be all right
Close your eyes and drift in dream
Rest in peaceful sleep

Dean to Castiel or Castiel to Dean, this song is almost too sweet, really. (Suggested by just_ruth.)

When She Loved Me by Sarah McLachan

When somebody loved me, everything was beautiful
Every hour we spent together lives within my heart

Suggested by jya_bd_cp_ttgb. :) Castiel’s love makes things better for Dean. Could also be Dean thinking about Mary, which...ouch.

Tears of an Angel by RyanDan

So hold on
Be strong
Everyday on we'll go
I'm here, don't you fear

The gifts Castiel brings for Dean. (Suggested by scifirn.)

Let It Rain by OK Go

Vision blue and blurry, falling angels in a flurry, spinning through the empty room
Did you come here to dance?
Whats in your glass?
Do you feel better now?

To me, this song is all about emotional release. And the repeated hallelujahs in the chorus don’t hurt a thing.

Sunrise by Brandon Heath

Find yourself on the very edge
Lying awake in an empty bed
Now you're breathin' just to make it through the night

What a lovely, hopeful song. (Suggested by teh_bug.)

We Are Not As Strong As We Think We Are by Rich Mullins

And these our hells and our heavens
So few inches apart
We must be awfully small and not as strong as we think we are

This one’s more for Sam, I think. Human frailty and beauty together.

Silence by Jars of Clay

And I
I got a question
I got a question
Where are You?

Another one for Sam, wondering where God is. Poor Sammy and his broken faith. ::sniff::

Toy Soldiers by Carbon Leaf

I've learned that people come and go
I've learned that families break and grow

Oh, Winchesters. Their poor screwed-up family. But looky! You got a new little brother/son/angel! Isn't that neat? (Suggested by brigid_tanner.)

Stumbling In by Great Big Sea

In the middle of it all
You always break my fall
In the middle of it all

All about Dean accepting help. Also love the line, “God knows what causes an angel to love a fool.”

Moses by The W’s

How can God ever use me? I’m just a nobody
He sees everything about me-what can He see in me?

I hope that eventually Dean will come to this kind of understanding about himself and his worthiness, despite how unworthy he feels.

Stickshifts and Safetybelts by CAKE

A lot of good cars are Japanese
But when I’m driving far I need my baby
I need my baby next to me

Roadtrip! Roadtrips are fun. Bench seats are good. They facilitate familial cuddling. ::nods seriously::

Goodnight, Demonslayer by Voltaire

Goodnight, demonslayer, goodnight
Now it's time to close your tired eyes
There are devils to slay and dragons to ride
If they see you coming, hell, they better hide

Well, it's kind of a lullaby for a little kid, and it's about killing demons and monsters and riding dragons, so really, what's not to love? (Suggested by echo_grace_07.)

Angels Unaware by Michael W. Smith

Battles of the heart and of the mind
We stay caught in mental purgatory 'til our existence can be defined
Meanwhile on the shores of parallel
There may be a holy conference held somewhere discussing all mankind
Maybe we are entertaining angels unaware

And back to the serious. :) I like the feel of this song, too, full of questions but suggesting that maybe, just maybe, there's a plan and purpose to all of this after all. (Suggested by winchestural.)

You'll Be in My Heart by Phil Collins

For one so small, you seem so strong
My arms will hold you, keep you safe and warm
This bond between us can't be broken
I will be here, don't you cry

For the record, pretty much every single song on the soundtrack for Disney's Tarzan will work for this story. (Think about it--Two Worlds, One Family, Strangers Like Me, Son of Man...) But this one is particularly perfect. ::warm fuzzies:: Seems like a great way to finish the soundtrack. (Suggested by several readers, actually.)
