So. Family reunion today. I get to talking with one of my cousins. She's a pretty cool girl--we didn't use to have much to talk about, but she's mellowed out a lot in the past few years, since she's had kids, and we strangely have a lot more in common now even though I am still unmarried and childless ( Read more... )

what fuckery is this?, hold me flist, family, supernatural

Lol, hate to break it but Twilight fulfills a lot of the requirements for good escapism. It has levels of excitement, danger, romance (duh), and the idea of supernatural/paranormal things living among us. In fact, it has a lot of that which Supernatural has... granted, with approximately 5 million times more romance that will ultimately make you gag, though if one is romantic enough one will keep reading it.

The unfortunate thing is that a silly little escapism series the author openly wrote for fun was turned into movies and became, well... the bane of pretty much everyone's existence... But I digress. As a once fan of the books who was ultimately turned off, I have spent FAR too much time analyzing this.

Anyway, congrats! How lucky to find someone else in your family who watches your show! Definitely give you something to look forward to at holidays, eh?

I know, I know. On an intellectual level, I can understand why people enjoy Twilight. I still find it completely dismaying, though. I mean, they're just fluffy and useless...they're bad. The writing is pedestrian and amateurish, the main characters are flat and dull, the plots drag on forever with nothing actually happening. And it perpetuates the myth that stalking and abusive behavior is sexy, as long it's "true love" and/or the guy is really, really hot. I just... yeah. D: D: D:

Next time I see her I'll try to make the conversation stick with Supernatural, yeah.

Well, the most unfortunate bit is that Meyer wrote Twilight for fun, so of course she didn't much care to make it deep and complex. She actually has another book she wrote on purpose, that raises difficult questions, has notable character growth and real suspense, but it's getting pretty much no attention because it isn't some fluffy romance. *shakes head* c'est la vie.

You could always squee about how Jonas Quinn from Stargate is coming into play...

Which is sort of a hilarious image. I know how you feel though- my friends who like Supernatural are all twihards too. I wonder why?

Yeah, I think my face did kind of do that. :D I'm sure it was funny to watch, if anyone had been watching (we were in kind of a cluster of people, several talking together, so hopefully no one was paying attention to me).

Awww, I can sympathize a little because a really good friend of mine is a fan of the Twilight series and keeps trying to convince me to watch the movies and such. And I'm like D: D: D:

On the other hand, my brother thinks my liking Supernatural is a failure in judgement on many levels, so with that in mind I try not to mock my friend about her Twilight obsession too much ;)

(oops, typo there hahaa...)

Yeah, I know some people look down on SPN in the same way, and to them I say :PPP.

Actually, I'm aware of SPN's faults. I know it's cheesy and problematic, and I love it anyway. Too many Twilight fans are completely oblivious to its issues, and that makes me sad.

That happened to me nannying this summer; while she was a lost cause, I hope you have more success showing her the light.

Oh, man, I don't know about my cousin. She's very strong in her opinions. I think we might have to live and let live.

Ooh, I had a similar experience. But I started showing her some less awful novels about vampires and werewolves, and she really liked them. One author in particular had started a YA series in her larger universe, and that went over well. But then I had the problem of trying to distract her from the rest of the books, unsuccessfully. Because it was only after she was hooked that I remembered that the rest of the books had some graphic sex and disturbing themes. Oops.
