The angels know where Bobby Singer lives. They know that the Winchesters frequent the home. When Lucifer unleashes a horde of reconstituted souls on Sioux Falls, Dean gets drunk and wonders, "Why don't those dicks just jump us there, 'xactly? They just stupid?"
"No; they are busy. Michael and Lucifer are confident that you will take your roles," Castiel explains. "The war rages without you."
"Fuck them," Dean says.
"Yes," Castiel says.
"What about Zach," Dean asks. "He likes fucking with us, huh."
"I don't know." Castiel mulls it over. "That's a concern."
So Castiel paints.

In India, ink was once called masi; it was made of tar and pitch, and ashes from bones. Castiel uses this mix, but with the ashes of angel wings, scraped from the floor of a warehouse, although Uriel's body is long since gone. Uriel disapproved the writing of humans, because it lent them power. Castiel appreciates the irony, but doesn't dwell on it

Thissssssss, omg, THIS. HOW DID YOU KNOW OF MY CASTIEL + ZIGGURATS OBSESSION??
But, that aside, this is gorgeous. There can never be enough of Cas being super old and knowing enough to own tiny humans with the power of his giant terrifying memory. And being dusty and sitting on cars and photosynthesizing.

Thank you very much! I don't know that much about ancient societies so I tend to stay away from writing this kind of stuff, but it was fun. :) I too love it when Castiel is treated as a creature of incredible knowledge, and I'm a little obsessed with the idea of him knowing blasphemous wards against angels.

Oooooohhhhh, oh, I love this. I love Castiel's BAMFness manifesting itself in this ancient knowledge and ability. I love Cas the book nerd. And then lounging in the sun, ohh yes, I like that too.
And he didn't even tell them what he's doing, of course, because he's quiet like that.
So great. I loved the descriptions of all the sigils and the way Castiel searches in his mind for a correct translation, as if unconsciously telling himself how to explain this to the Winchesters if they ask.

Hooray! I too love scholar!Cas, and ancient!Cas. In fact, I kind of wish that Castiel14 had been more like "I am so oooooold" and stuff.
One of the things I've always noticed about Castiel is that he's always a little exasperated by having to explain himself; he's the type to do and never tell. If I could wish for a fic, I'd like one where Castiel has to explain why he can't go into Bobby's home after he's angel-proofed it. OH WAIT, I CAN. XD;;

Hooray! I love scholar!Cas. If you look up 'masi' and 'pradakshina' on wikipedia, you can read about the actual practices! Pradakshina in English is 'cirumambulation', lit. Latin for 'circular walking'. And it was how Indians worshipped! But actually I don't know that much about it; I just borrowed some fun stuff for Cas here.

Oh, lovely. I was going to mention that fic by aesc, since it inspired a similar obsession with Castiel's brain (or does he even have a brain? he exists outside anatomy; damnit, this is going to turn into another fic) and the idea that he is a creator in his own right, a thinker, a philosopher.
That and a BAMF, but I think he would probably frown at the term. :P
In the dust on the windows he writes with a finger: empty-of-God. That is not quite what it means, but if the Winchesters, or Bobby, asks, that is what Castiel will say. That little bit made my breath catch, because he is making a place empty of his faith, empty of his being, empty of his song. Because he loves these creatures enough to hollow himself out a little for them. Agh, basically I am inarticulate and in love with this little piece.

(Oh, the brain thing! I think tomorrow morning I'm going to be meta-ing all over the place about how I think angels interact with their vessels, and how they are metaphysical, and stuff. ♥ ), and yes, I tend to think of Castiel as ... almost a counter-espionage agent, if you will? Intimately familiar with the tactics of the enemy. Therefore, he knows all those Enochian warding symbols that can angel-proof a building, and stuff like that.
Hahaha, now you've given me the mental image of someone telling Castiel he is a badass motherfucker, and Castiel frowning at them.
Oh, OH, thank you so much for commenting on the 'empty-of-God' line. Yes, that's exactly what I was going for: he's making Bobby's house a godless place, because angels have no domain there.
