Instead of defining myself as “good” based on what I don’t do, I want it to be because of what I do. I want to have an active standard to live up to, not a passive one; something based on presence rather than absence ( Read more... )

I find that definitions are very important. It's easy to fail if your goal is simply to be a better human. Ask yourself what that entails. Ask yourself, what can you do today to advance that goal which you have just defined, then stick to that, break it up into simpler steps if neccesary. Feel accomplished, positive reinforcement works wonders.

I recently went through an exercise with some friends where we all wrote down the things that we value, why we value them, and how we express that we value them. These things that we value could be people, circumstances, personal attributes or behaviors-- pretty much anything. The results were very interesting (perhaps I'll email them to you). First, when I realized what matters to me, it made it easier to prioritize things in life, almost without thinking about it. Second, I realized where there were gaps -- things I valued that I wasn't paying attention to or had never attained or never expressed. Then we wrote out goals that stemmed from those values, like "I express my love to my family and close friends my staying in touch with them and paying attention to the things that are important to them." Note the present tense on the goals. Very important from an identity point of view. I'm recognizing that these are things I value, and therefore they're already inside me. I'm just describing how I will enact them ( ... )
