The morning commute is usually a half-hour of silence, everyone groggy-eyed and staring blankly out windows or at the feet of the person in front of them

habit has a lot to do with it. I just got into some serious negative thinking habits, negative believing habits, believing things that really have no basis--which are basically all about doing away with basis altogether. there are some other factors, like sex and bad theology and Fight Club (the book, not the movie), but I don't really want to go into them, because I'm seeing clearly enough these days to know it's not about the validity of these ideas, it's about mental habits (and sex and bad theology and Fight Club). If you really want to hear more about what I've been through, I do believe that God can be glorified by how He's helped me get through all these depressing ideas and all my own mistakes, but it's not going to be pleasant for me to recount. basically, the less I think about these things, the better. you can email me at jferrell2 [at] washcoll [dot] edu if you want to talk about it further.
This is completely off-topic from what you guys were discussing, but:
Have you ever read any Thomas Merton? I just discovered him (this morning, as a matter of fact) -- Catholic monk who I think wrote sometime in the 60s/70s. Just scanning through a book of his essays, some thoughts on life, death, love, purity, and education really hit the nail on the head for me with a bunch of things I'd been thinking about for a while. I'm champing at the bit for a discussion about him now, and it occurred to me you might've read/heard about him.
I've heard of him, like in passing--the name rings a bell. I don't know anything about what he actually said though. I'm planning to hit the library soon, so I'll try and pick up a copy of something by him. What's the title of the essay collection you've got there?
Love and Living is the one I've got. I'm only through the first two essays so far (I keep rereading), so I can't vouch for the rest, but at least the first two are excellent.
You do seem to be on a better path now; I don't want to make you trudge through bad memories, it's your own path and no one should force you on it.. Best of luck!
