Well, you can do that thing where you have the phone but don't give anyone the number. Or just a select few. I do enjoy mine, now that I have one that works. And I'm the same, always online at home, so for a long time I resisted having an internetty phone. But so convenient for directions and taking photos and playing Words With Friends. ;-)
I have a tab thing, so I can get online when I am out and about if I need to, but it's amazing how often I don't need to. The issue seems to be communications, really. But...sigh.
Although the Words with Friends thing? I miss Literati fiercely.
I can barely afford my landline, let alone a mobile plan. The few times I gave a prepaid cell phone a shot, I kept it turned off 99% of the time -- which pissed off people to whom I'd given the number. Especially since I checked voicemail only once a week.
Also, mobile phones consistently have the WORST signal receptivity inside my place, dropping calls or getting staticky & forcing me to go outside to have a conversation.
So in your case, weigh signal coverage, signal quality, reliability, & your willingness to be assumed to be on call 24/7 with the cost of a data plan + smartphone.
Well, the thing is, if I get a cell phone, my beloved will say *Hey! Let's ge3t rid of the landline and have all the annoying calls come to your cell phone!" Which - ha ha ha - no.
I basically just use my phone as portable Internet. For the last three years, I've had my phone always on silent with vibrate off and a note in my voicemail that if you leave a voicemail, I will never listen to it, please text. The fact I never answer my phone has trained most people out of trying to call it.
I mostly use my phone to surf the internet (god forbid something happens to Benedict Cumberbatch without me knowing about it immediately!) and texting but for practical purposes, if i'm driving somewhere and i break down without it i'd be screwed (and really tired from the walk home).
So maybe if you do much driving alone then it'd be good to have one.

Like that black on black on black outfit? That was... sorry, what were we talking about? I was blinded by the lovely. (But was Sophie wearing a leather dress? I mean, really? REALLY REALLY?)
Yes exactly like that! He's killing it (& me) at the moment! Eh the dress...at first I thought it was Black but then it looked dark brown? I was mostly concerned by how hot it must have been to wear? As if being in the general vicinity of BC isn't enough to be hot and bothered.
As much as I have a blast with the texting, etc.., (and the Ruzzle:)), the thing I would NEVER give up is definitely the easy communication. I've been able to let Kidlet do things alone I never would have if I hadn't been able to be in constant touch with him via our cell phones. I can find my husband in Walmart without circling nine thousand times. He can call me from the grocery store and say, "Which kind of soy milk was it??" Life is just SIMPLER with a cell phone in your pocket. Not to mention, with my health issues, I feel a zillion times safer having one on me when I'm out and about on my own, driving through the mountain pass out here, etc.. Really wish I'd had one about a year before I did, so that when I threw my knee out in the middle of a field with my dog when I was 6 months pregnant, I didn't just have to wait for a neighbor to drive by... And don't even get me started on coordinating pickups at the airport

But yeah, it's a safety issue, too.
