i have a small but reasonably diverse collection of model pics (about 3 gigs of pictures). problem is, i have a shitty computer running windows 98 with old burn software that can't recognise some of the filenames (the one's with underscores, more than 12 characters etc). basically to cut a long story short i can't burn the damn pics onto disc (there's some other complications involved too). so i was thinking maybe i should put them online- maybe do myself and other enthusiasts a favour in the process! question is, how much is the upload limit for a free host? do you use a free or paid site? sometimes ive noticed that pics you put on don't come out right-for whatever reason the host decides the picture cant be displayed. that has me a little worried, because id hate to lose these shots. eventually, and perhaps sooner rather than later, this computer will die- and when it does my 'stamp collection' (lol) will go down with the ship.
I keep all my web activity of this sort strictly amateur, so I'm only using free hosting. Imagevenue and as well other similar services have no upload limit, but there is also no guarantee that your image files won't just disappear one day. It works fine for me, but I'm not sure if it will satisfy your purposes.
It seems to me that you might be better off using dedicated hosting and keeping your collection all at the same place easily accessible not just via www, but also via file transfer protocol of some sort. As far as I know you can easily get, say, 500MB of space with free web-hosting service (to name one - officelive.microsoft.com , also gets you free 2nd-level domain name), but you will face serious traffic per month restrictions.
As far as your problem with CD-burning software is concerned, you might have a chance to beat the file-name restriction by making a ~700MB RAR or whatever other type of archives and burning the archive files.
