I've visited "the south", and Oklahoma (wait, that probably is in the south; oh well, you get the idea; Georgia, Mississippi and Oklahoma), and yet the one time I've ever had anybody (other than people I know joking around) say anything like the following was ... well, in frickin' LA!

I didn't even see who it was, much less an SUV. I only heard it and it didn't even register that it was for you. Figured it was some mentally incapacitated homeless person.

I don't think they were sheltered so much as... unoriginal.

Heh, I saw quite clearly who was yelling out the open window of their stupid SUV.

A few years ago I was crossing the street in San Bruno, with a walk sign where a bunch of cars were simultaneously trying to make an unprotected left turn with the green light after exiting the freeway (so anyone crossing the street there holds up traffic). Someone with his window rolled down said (sarcastically) "Take your time, hippie."

I was both aghast (when did "hippie" become an insult?) and perversely flattered. I don't often receive that level of praise.

We southerners like long hair.

I just returned from the South, visiting family.

Strange thing that happenned to me at Golden Gate Park:

I was walking with my boss back to pack up things in a car. Both of us were dressed somewhat professionally.

An SUV full of young men drove by with their windows down - "Go back home, fags!"

I'd imagine we were in San Francisco, and if there was a home for "fags" it would be...well you know.

And I was the only fag among us. And I'm only half of one. I don't believe I looked it. There was no queer event in the park.

Bizarre.

Young men in SUVs with the windows rolled down are bizarre.

I'm guessing if one is the sort of neanderthal who yells "go back home, fags", then one probably imagines that any two men walking along together are gay.
