local voting - do you?

I keep meaning to post about this, but always forget when I'm on the computer! I'm curious, given how a majority of my f-list is pretty impassioned about politics, if y'all vote for your local elections also ( Read more... )

I haven't actually had a chance to vote in a local election yet - the last local election was held, I think, a year before my 18th birthday, and we only vote every four years. I do plan on voting next time, though, I see it as a privilege to be able to influence what happens. To be honest, I'm not too concerned with most of the issues local politicians usually stand for, so I'm usually tempted to not look into all their viewpoints. I do feel I should, though.

Parish, district, European and national elections don't necessarily fall in the same year here usually you tend to be voting for one or two places.

Then I usually go on party lines unless there have been good reason to go with a certain individual.

Well in the UK there isn't really a national election anyway. There's a general election where the PM can change, but they become PM by being the leader of the party that has the most seats in the House of Commons; all we vote for are our local members of parliament. So local elections become national ones. (But there are also local council elections...)

I always vote. Emily Davison died for my right to vote and I sometimes wish the same applied for men so that they'd appreciate what a privilege it is.

Yes, I vote during local elections, everything from school boards to county sheriff (in Utah). I had to do major research on the local issues and candidates here in my temporary home because they vote for judges here and we don't do that in Utah (we just vote to retain them once they're appointed. Here, the judges actually run campaigns.) I also vote in all primary elections, and for any special elections (used for changing tax rates or closing schools, for example.) My personal opinion is that the small, local elections are more important than the national ones anyway.
