I once bought some cilantro. The cashier had to ask me what it was, which wasn't too surprising since it looks a lot like parsley.

But then he stuck his nose in it and took a BIG whiff. INSIDE of the cilantro. I told him to take it off the bill, that I'd get a new one.

So disgusting.

Gross, yes, but at least he was willing to smell it. Most of them look at me like I'm a complete freak show when I unload fruits and veggies (or--gasp!--tofu) from my cart. If they don't think I'm crazy by then, they sure do when I tell them I want to use my canvas bags instead of plastic ones. They usually can't figure out what to do and I end up filling the bags myself. And WalMart sells cloth bags (right by the check out!), so this shouldn't be too unnerving for them!

Your experiences are eye-openers for me. More surprising than the ones you had in Africa. I didn't realise such places existed in not-small-town North America.
