Bao: it's meant to be the mother's memory of her son's childhood. She's looking back on an idealised memory of her baby as her "little dumpling" - and the cartoon exaggerates that by having her remember him as a literal dumpling. The ending is her coming to accept thst he isn't her little dumpling anymore, he's a young man with his own life.

But yeah, I've heard from a number of adults who were bewildered by the short, and I can only imagine what the kids in the audience made of it...

I can't believe the short expected me to get that with zero dialogue. Thank you for the explanation but the short sucks because it had to be explained to me outside of the short.

Also the mother sucks and is super creepy if that's the explanation.
