Matchgirl: Andersen had a massive hard-on for "happy endings" where the main character dies, but it's okay because he goes to heaven. The worst example I read was an obscure story called Death and the Mother, where a woman goes to the underworld to rescue her dead daughter. She meets Death, who basically says "if your daughter had lived she would've had a sucky life, so it's just as well she's n heaven now". And that's meant to be a happy ending!
Believe it or not, there's a cartoon version of that story, too... only the director had the sense to remove the "happy" aspect and present it as a horror story. It works better that way.
