2010 ya'll!

The results of my not-anywhere-close-to-scientific poll on the next steps for the CA gay marriage fight are in, and the results are about what I expected: most want to go for 2010, but a significant portion think we should wait for 2012 ( Read more... )

I seem to remember a survey taken just after the post-election protests, where a significant percentage of Prop. 8 supporters declared that the protests had made them change their minds about gay marriage, and that if the election were held again, they would have voted against Prop. 8. It wasn't a huge number, but Prop. 8's margin of victory was so slim that it would indeed have turned the tide.

Since then, we've had Iowa, Vermont, Maine, etc., and I'm positive that if Prop. 8 went up for a vote today, it would fail. So bring it on for 2010!

Agreeing with you, but adding in a perhaps-cynical-but-proven tactic: 2010 is an "off-year" (non-POTUS) election, which should dampen the effectiveness of whatever strategy the other side rolls out. Yes, it will be the election for CA's new Governor but that isn't the catalyst POTUS is.

I ran into an unexpected dust-up with some FB acquaintances over my opinions on Lori Jean, the person who took a 2-week vacation during the thick of the Prop. 8 battle (and has been tone-deaf, to be polite on several other matters). They came to her defense in a big way, citing her years of HIV/AIDS activism.

Makes me wonder - are the skill sets for HIV/AIDS advocacy/activism effective and appropriate for more global civil rights work? I think maybe that's a "Partially No" ... and may explain a lot of the recent drama here in CA.

Bill - I re-posted my orginal comment here in my own most post. If you want to have a dialogue about this there, that's fine ... but I'd like to keep it focused on the question/topic in my final paragraph.

I am on the same page as you re. these individuals' work re. Pro. 8. I don't want to host that particular debate in my journal, though. Thanks.

I think I've made the same shift you have - back in Nov., I was definitely in the 2012 camp, but I think the "the train has left the station" argument nails it.
