Is it bad form to tell a door-to-door charity worker that you're unclothed under your dressing gown? I didn't, for the record, but the thought crossed my mind.

Depends how attractive they are and whether they have the kind of face that sues for harassment!

(if you go door to door for things you encounter all sorts and learn to take it on the chin. erm. let me rephrase that.)

You beat me to it!

(I nearly did tell a couple of them that once...)

Would that be to get them to go away or to entice them to come in?

To get them to go away. The comment came to mind not as something that would be embarrassing for them, but more as justification for why it wasn't convenient for me to talk right then. By the time I'd decided not to say it, we were already mid-conversation and the sight of me being semi-naked didn't seem to faze her so I thought fuck it that I might as well continue until the conversation came to a close.

Wait a minute... people wear clothes under dressing gowns? WHY?!

That's weird. Although I do occasionally wear my dressing gown over clothes when I'm cold as my Arthur Dent moment!

No more unethical than being a 6'6" male answering the door on a Sunday wearing nothing except this teeshirt and a pair of boxer shorts, the remains of goth makeup around your eyes, black nailvarnish and your arm around two men who are wearing not mouch more than skimpy undies.

And when the Godspiel came out, point at teeshirt and say "This is my religion" and watch them RUN away!

Personally I don't let them speak "No thanks!" and if I don't realise I will interrupt and say "Actually no thanks" and close the door in their face. I don't buy/sell insurance/charity/utilities/God/religion/other at the door.

I don't indulge in door-to-door folk transactions either. I also try to be polite, rather than just closing the door. Ask me one time about the sales call I had - it's a funny story.

Your story sounds like it is based on reality - anyone I know?
