MacBook: to buy or not to buy, that is the question.

Dec 19, 2007 15:32

Should I buy a MacBook? Basically for the shiny, but also so I can work/post/faff on public transport/holiday/whatever, and because the dollar is Most Weak. Or are there other 13"-ish notebooks around the same price that are better deals, bang for the buck, etc.?

Poll MacBook: YAY or NAY

EDIT: if you say Nay, you must suggest alternatives. Just 'cause.

I don't suppose you're interested in an older Powerbook?

In a word...no. Too big. And old.

Dell XPS m1330? Or even better... latitude XT?

The former...maybe, although it's a bit lumpy in places, and I'm sort of liking the idea of giving OSX a try. Battery life's good, but the final cost for a similarly specced machine is pretty much identical.

The latter is simlpy far too expensive.

I post "Yay" but with the additional note that if you want something really portable, the Asus eeePC is awesome.

At the price, it's almost tempting to just get both; Asus eeePC for basic stuff, MacBook for work stuff and the like. Actually, the eeePC looks quasi ideal to just leave in Italy, at my parent's place....

Yeah. I was going to get the MacBook, but frankly I don't want to drag it about London on my daily commute. The eeePC on the other hand would be fine, and not buying the MacBook leaves me money to get a new desktop instead.
