There's always the new Palm Verio...it's going to be interesting, I think, because it serves the need for nontechnical computing quite well. It's limited in scope but it's got what's necessary for people who only need word processing, spreadsheets, mail, and internets.
You mean the Folia, and yes, it looks nifty, but the problem is it's still too bulky to be an actual 'carry it around without a bag' item. Which is what I'm looking to replace.
grafitti/stylus text input is complete, utter, unadulterated shitcakes.
You are such a wronghead it is untrue. Graffiti is shorthand lite and as such much faster than typing on a small keyboard if you actually take the time to learn it. You are only excused if you already know shorthand - as it is different enough to confuse people who are shorthand experts.
Having used the TX (nice big screen) for long enough to learn Graffiti reasonably well, and having used and owned a Psion 5mx, I can quite honestly say the Psion's tiny keyboard is much, much faster and easier to use for text input than Graffiti. IRC on a 5MX is perfectly doable, no problems, quite fast, and I can do a decent approximation of, y'know, typing more information than a mere note-to-self or appointment. Which takes forever on a graffiti pen input device.
Scrolling, controlling non-text input items with a pen device is a pure joy, though. That's true enough. But taking notes is a somewhat painful endeavour, precisely because graffiti can be a bit picky if/when you start 'writing' too quickly. Of course, a bluetooth fold-up keyboard solves that issue for less money...
Well, yes, that's quite the point; I'm comparing two entirely different devices that fulfill completely different functions :)
I completely agree that the current crop of mobiles and PDAs have keyboards that are far, far worse than the alternative (ie, Graffiti, which is better than the tiny tap-it-with-stylus keyboard thingy). Enter the UMPC avec Keyboard.
Methinks I'll let my dad see if he can find one of these things, and try it out to see if it feels solid/decent enough.

There may be some non-mainstream devices that have full-sized or at least near full-sized keyboards, but I don't know of any...
