The Kindness of Strangers

It's a nerve-wracking thing to know that a review of something you wrote/assembled is in the pipeline, so it was with great relief that I read the very favourable review of The Event on Scary Minds.  It'll be interesting to keep an eye on downloads over at lulu and see how many people give it a try based on the review.  There was a lot in the ( Read more... )

Aha! After a conversation with Debbie and a quick reread of the story all has become clear in the world of finger pointing. It is not, as I thought, some complex writer-speak denoting authorial over-signifying of plot details, or some other stylistic flaw.

The characters in the story point their fingers at things. 3 times.

OK, so one is tapping, one is extending a finger to put a window down then deciding not to, and one is actually pointing. Still, that's what the feedback was about.

I think I might have been interrogating that particular piece of feedback a little too hard :P

If it makes you feel better I was really worried too, like you were having characters telegraph actions too much or something. I briefly, became convinced that I too, am guilty of too much finger pointing in my work.

I'm glad that neither of us are.

A favourable comparison to Janet Frame is something not to be sneezed at! That's a pretty decent review, all up, which should bring a bit of attention the book's way...

It was certainly an unexpected bonus! The pdf has been dowloaded 35 times in the past month or so, which is a notable jump :-)

"It's almost as if each Writer wrote a piece and then waited for their fellow collaborators to add their own pieces before continuing with the next piece."
Ho ho ho.

Thanks for posting the review. :-)

One of the advantages of print on demand is the ability to update files easily. If anyone spots any grammatical/spelling errors in the pdf let me know and I'll correct away. If anyone wants to read The Event and correct as you go, I can send you the word file!
