I'm almost done reading Calculating God by Robert Sawyer, a novel about alien races who believe in Intelligent Design. It's a frustrating experience, full of vicarious embarassment.( Read more... )

Quick, go read Connie Willi's "inside job" (Asimov's, Jan 2005) as an antidote.

I've only been more disappointed in Robert's work, the more of it I read.
Though I agree, he's very pleasant in person.

Always disappointing to be let down by an author you had high hopes for, especially in such a fundamental way (pardon my choice of words, my thesaurus has failed me).

Loved that comic strip, though. Very appropriate.

Sorry you were disappointed so much, but good critique.

I'm dropping by here via the link from Whatever. I've read--if I recall correctly--two Sawyer novels. Starplex and one where arrogant and smug scientists discover souls. Starplex I had somewhat liked, but this second novel was traipsing over philosophy of mind territory, where I have some small interest. The impression I got was of a fellow who had gone ahead and dutifully read the literature, but was somehow prevented from understanding it at all. It was terrible, and I've avoided Sawyer like the plague ever since.
