Well, that didn't go AS well as planned

Classes start tomorrow, and I never did get to upload the newer versions of some of my userpics as userpics because I still have some unanswered questions about a couple of them (and a quickly-growing [even for me] fear that one of my comments on my previous entry is offensive). (EDIT: Quickly-growing fear averted ( Read more... )

What controversy? I warned you about that class, it's going to make you feel like you are nuts. That's the way everyone feels when they take their first few Psych classes. There's controversy everywhere-that doesn't mean you have to pick a side or whatever if you don't want to.

Well, I know there's stuff in it about whether or not people's personalities can change over time, and some stuff about gender and psychology. The first one I mentioned sounds a lot like the Forbidden Comment Threads, and the second one doesn't sound any better because, as I've seen countless times, every time someone even mentions the word "gender", arguing is almost guaranteed to begin.

And I will have to pick sides on it because there are papers to write, and I find it likely for there to be some sort of debate session in-class as well. I know you warned me about the class, but I think it's more likely to make me feel like the Forbidden Comment Threads are everywhere than it is to make me think I'm nuts.

Although I did get the impression that there's slightly more things in the textbook about the anatomy of the brain and how that relates to psychology than about anything controversial. Let's hope that's true...

I don't even get how you think it sounds like the forbidden comment threads, but don't worry! You can't avoid controversy in life all the time, because no two people are not on fire. Meaning, everyone is different and thinks differently and therefore will disagree. You can still stay out of it as much as possible. Plus, in an academic setting, it's all just talk with very little feeling behind it. So you don't have to worry about upsetting someone if your opinion is different, which is what I assume you are worried about when it comes to controversy? If that's the case, they won't get upset if your opinion is different in a psychology class.

Unless there's some sort of debate session in class, or the professor asks what our opinions are on a subject.

Plus, in an academic setting, it's all just talk with very little feeling behind it.

Unless there's a debate etc. etc.

So you don't have to worry about upsetting someone if your opinion is different, which is what I assume you are worried about when it comes to controversy?

I do have to worry about arguments that would be considered flame wars if they were online starting in class, since that happened once or twice in College Connections.

If that's the case, they won't get upset if your opinion is different in a psychology class.

If you're saying the professor won't be upset with me, then you're probably right about that. But other students might be mad at me for it, especially if I word it as badly as I did in the Forbidden Comment Threads...
