I limit my connectedness because I don't need the stress. I have a FB account and my LJ and a couple of message boards, but that's it.
I think people are willing to be nastier online because there's the anonymity casting your words into cyberspace- you aren't looking at a person and seeing the hurt your words cause.
You know, I'm actually starting to feel the same about tumblr. I just wanna shoot the shit and have fun but my Dashboard makes me SO ANGRY all the time. Maybe I need to take a break.
I once spent five years on a wonderful discussion board and learned a lot of skills for dealing with wank as well as for genuine conflict. Some of my solutions were positive and some were not. (But that's okay. Once in a while it pays to be nasty.)
The trouble is, some situations are recurring, and dealing with them today even in the most positive way doesn't fix them because they'll just recur tomorrow. This is especially true when there are issues about which people can't agree on and over which they won't agree not to rip each other's throats out. (i.e. ALWAYS)
I started being very picky about when I get involved in those kinds of internet situations, about four years back. I can deal with the tension level, but I reached a point where I wasn't learning anything new about communication that would justify my spending my time like that.
