A lengthy introduction would be excessive...

Title: "For All Mankind"
Day/Theme: September 5) burn the length and breadth of sky
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Character/Pairing: Fuyutsuki/Yui
Rating: PG

Author's Note: A quiet piece from the ambitious NGE project, specifically one of Fuyutsuki's meditations post End of Evangelion, hours after his re-emergence from the sea of LCL. I'll let the words and the piece of music that shaped it speak for themselves: Suggested track: "An Ending (Ascent)" by Brian Eno -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF0qgxV0UW0

The ring of red hovering in the sky was less visible by day than by night: the blue of the sky turned it into a ribbon of violet that vaguely resembled a contrail. But at night, when the stars and the moon shone, the blue veil stripped away, leaving the ring visible. A large blotch of red still showed on the face of the moon, though it seemed to have grown smaller as the moon phased it into shadow.

The blood of the Shekinah, caught by the pull of earth's gravity, Fuyutsuki thought, gazing up at the night sky, his back to Lilith's petrified head. A new ring, like the ice field circling Saturn or the gas ring around Jupiter, but also a testament to man's folly, when he chose to fly too close to godhood. The dream he sought to achieve was instead a nightmare he has started to awaken from. The question remains, has he awakened in time? There are only four of us now, and one of survivors is not human, or at least, not fully human as we define it. He sighed, turning his gaze to a bright purple-tinted speck still shining, dimmer than before, but still visible against the darkness of space.

What did you intend, Yui? he asked, gazing after Unit 01, now Yui's tomb and final testament. Did you hope to bring peace? Did the return of the primordial sea factor into your hope for a bright future? Whatever it was you sought to show to mankind, I hope that he learns from it. The problem is, it takes a cataclysm for man to learn his lessons. The sky had to burn and the sea had to boil and the land had to turn to ash before he could see where he had gone wrong. I hope that we can rebuild from this, Yui-sensei: You taught me more than I ever taught you and you taught mankind more than he ever looked for...
