There hasn't been a clear-cut "this is why", but signs point it being budgeting reasons. I suspect the royalties being paid to Warner Brothers/the Wachowskis was getting to be more than the revenues the game was generating.

... damnit. MxO was probably one of the best urban fantasy games out there.
