It's a comic book series by Neil Gaiman; I just started getting interested in it after seeing Mr. Gaiman at the sci-fi convention last month...
How to describe this series, since it's very surreal in an existentially thoughtful way...? Basically it deals with a "family" of beings, not quite gods, but more like existential aspects personified (Dream, Death, Destiny, Desire, Despair, Delirium, and Destruction), and the effects of their actions on and within the realm of us mere mortals, but specifically it deals with Dream, also known as Morpheus, the Lord of the Dreaming, who brings both dreams and nightmares to mortals and occaisionally steps in to aid them in maneuvering the landscape of his realm. But perhaps the most popular character in the series is Dream's older sister Death (one of my favorites, too!), whose task is to lead people into the afterlife, and who manifests as a perky Goth girl.
