“Düstere Zeiten” sind mittlerweile irgendwie auch so ein Totschlagargument der Neuzeit geworden, wenn jemandem irgendetwas unbequem ist... Ausdruck eines Zeitgeistes, der darin bestärkt, das eigene Ego überzubewerten.

Probably lots of people overestimate their own significance. Maybe it is a defense mechanism?

Probably both. But, as you name it, I see the first factor being the more significant one.
You know, if "you" are through that shit too, a long time ago, with any sort of thing - that contained overestimating your significance as an individual -, then you know the drill of it. The psychological structure behind it.
And I conclude that often enough too.
People mistake themselves and their views and their words for way more significant to the rest of the world than they truly are.
It's one of the reasons why I'm sick of anyone referring to "1984" when wanting to defend anything they say or when wanting to describe the times "we" live in.
- If "we" lived in 1984-circumstances as the work describes it, then I figure it would have more of the taste of "Guantanamo every day" than just the bullshit that's going on here where authorities are too stupid to even handle illegal anti-Corona rallies or illegal immigrants.
