What mainly disappeared from Western culture is a productive way to deal with censorship. There are two ways which have become regular how people handle it: Either they completely ignore it, and even try to up the ante, or they comply and shut up about it.
Culture from former centuries and partly Eastern culture also know a third way: Criticizing without being too obvious about what is criticized.
It is different than irony or plain euphemism or exaggeration, it more is like talking in secret language which someone from the outside is able to attain without taking a course in cryptology. The only thing it requires is being attentive and having a great general knowledge.
Result of all of this is: You get the freedom to criticize the king, but he may not be able to lock you in jail.
