I need to learn to fall better. My butt is sore from jukido last night, from landing on it. I was trying very hard not to tense up when I was thrown, but it's not always easy to let yourself fall when you're actually really getting thrown at speed. Still, I guess I have to learn sometime. And that's what the mats are for ( Read more... )

I'm glad to hear that you were even able to talk about it. For four years I was in martial arts and instructed a lot of people. Even though I could see signs of abuse or bullying, none of my students wanted to open up to me. Maybe because of my size or grizzly bear presence, but I try to be as nice as I can be.

Anyway, good luck with the break-falls. I had to practically throw my shoulder out before I got it right. But, once I got it, I've got it. Now I'd have to concentrate on doing it wrong. ;-)

So, chin up. And don't take any crap from anybody! :-)

It's something you have to own for yourself, before you can talk about it to others.

There's a lot of shame attached, even though there shouldn't be.

she kind of nerved herself and awkwardly asked, "Right now?"

One of the good ones, asking the hard questions.

Are there really people who don't flinch and shy away at a face strike? I mean, yeah. Own history and own damage, I am a poor judge of normal. But you would think that flinching at someone coming at your face IS normal. Or I would.

Apparently it was a pretty dramatic flinch. :-P

And yeah, I was kind of proud of her. I should try to find a way to tell her that this week.

If you do figure out a way to tell her and can work it in maybe tell her that a complete stranger on the other side of the country said thank you. Because IME as a person with a history of abuse for any number of reasons a lot of people do not want to know.
