I love trains. Correction, no, I love travelling on trains. I'm not interested in engines or specifications or what-have-you. It's about the romance, and the opening of the new St Pancras Eurostar terminal has made me realise just how much I love it. There's so much romance around trains and railway stations: think of Brief Encounter, Murder on ( Read more... )

I adore train travel. I was lucky enough to travel around Europe by train in the late 70s-early 80s--including round trip from Moscow to then-Leningrad--and I miss it so much here in the US where train travel is usually too expensive to justify, although with gas prices, I'd probably use the one from here to the SF Bay Area more if I were single.

There's a fantastic train you can take from Northern California--actually I think you can pick it up as far north as Seattle--down to SoCal and it's a gorgeous trip that takes you down the coast through some places the roads don't go. I took it in the spring once and it was a beautiful trip.

Ooh, will have to try the Cali trip if I'm ever in the US again. Good tip!

I love trains, on one of our UK trips we actually switched from driving to trains and were much happier! Now I'm thinking we should take the train to Chicago sometime to see Ed's brother.

Yes! Do it. More environmentally friendly and you get to see the country too.

There is something very romantic about train travel. Regular Amtrak service on the east coast of the US isn't very memorable, but I imagine some of the long-distance trips might pass by some nice locations. I can't help but think, though, that most of the more comfortable trains and scenic trips are in Europe.
