My 12 YO's school sent home a note. They are applying for academy status. Can anyone tell me in a nutshell what this means? Firedancer, are you out there?

as far as I can tell, they get extra money, but it makes no sense.

master button does after school archery at a local Catholic secondary school - they are a sport and science academy... what that means, if no children in the area are any good at sport or science, and they all want to do art, I have no idea!

I smell money coming off the note too.

Maybe if kids want to do art at a sports school, they can use the cross bow to shoot paint at the canvas!

All I know is that when the news covered it some people were really against it but couldn't articulate what it was that was wrong with it.

I think it was something to do with the teachers or the standard of teaching.

They really didn't explain their argument so I'm in the dark.

In the states, if a school wants to go charter, you look carefully behind the small print for conservatives. I'm wondering if it means the same thing here. And if they'll want to change the curriculum.

well, they have to follow the National Curriculum, so it's really just they emphasise sciences and get extra money for science equipment, as far as I can tell...
