Mr. Bishop and I have always talked about adopting, I guess I always assumed we'd adopt one day. He is going to India soon so we started looking into adoption...

Guess what?

WE'RE TOO FUCKING OLD!!

We have to have a combined age of less than 90 to adopt a baby from India and we are 93!

Is that a government regulation or an agency regulation? If it proves to be insurmountable, you have my deepest sympathies, but hopefully you can find a way around it. ((((hugs))))

It's a gov reg in India. It makes some practical sense because you want to make sure the parents live long enough to raise the kid. But people are living longer and having kids later so I'm sure some of those laws will change. I always expected a kid to drop into our lives because Mr B's work takes him around/near some of the poorest people in the world. We always thought we'd end up with a Mexican\South\Central American kid. I don't feel particularly old so it kind of took me aback, you know? I guess I expected it to happened kinda passively so we'll have to talk and we how active we want to be. Suddenly we're on deadline!

Yeah we had trouble conceiving our eldest - not quite to the IVF stage but heading in that direction if the hormone treatment hadn't worked - so we looked into adoption at that point and I was only 31 at the time but our options were already narrowing! Hopefully other countries will be less stringent.

I think we'd be in better shape if we tried to adopt an older child. Joyce Maynard just adopted sisters, from an Asian country. China? Maybe Africa. She's single and older than I am. Maybe it will come to an older child. But I can't help wanting a baby. We'll see.

You'd think they'd take into account how young the youngest Bishop is.

Yeah.

She's pushing 8! I was a child of 41 when she was born!

You wanted to adopt? I'd not known about this! Although apparently it's a moot point… that's a rather random number to toss out for something as important as adopting. :P I'm not impressed.

We always expected Sister Alma down in Mexico to hand us a baby one day. She works with the S. Americans who ride on top of the trains trying to get to Mexico for a better life. Things have changed since we moved to the UK - I honestly had not thought about who would let us adopt when we're out of our home country. We're having to get more proactive about it now, since time seems to be running out!
