That's on of my biggest pet peeves. The complete and comprehensive lack of understanding of the the concept of risk regularly displayed by the news media. And their equally total lack of any grasp of how statistics should actually be used.

It always amazes me to see how much hype the news industry tries to build about any given thing. I work in the cell phone industry so I get to see a decent amount of this and its real life effect. I feel silly sometimes trying to confirm to a customer that "insert latest rumor here" isn't a real concern. Your points are very valid, and slightly amusing.
