I am, for the record, willing to bet anyone that wants to take the bet any amount of money that the LHC will not destroy the earth tomorrow. I'm assure by all the scientists I know that it's got no chance of doing so, hence my confidence in offering the bet.

ETA: Look at the source code for extra giggles ( Read more... )

funny, science, large hadron collider

However, should you be incorrect you still won't need to pay out. Win-win. :D

(I'd like to see the plan for updating the webpage in that event, however.)

You're putting people off betting, I could do with the cash...

They could do an if/else thing - if 1=1, then "NO", else "YES" (after all, if the LHC armageddons us it'll be by breaking the fundamental laws of the universe, right?)

... and if you lose the bet the winner won't be around to collect the money anyway!

*doesn't believe the LHC will destroy the earth*

At least the hadron misspellings have been amusing.

To quote Armando Ianucci, "it'll either turn the world inside out, or, be boring."

well, it might turn our concept of the universe inside out - which would be quite interesting.

Pff, what's the most exciting thing they might find?

I have absolutely no idea.

But I really do think that whatever they find - whatever the experiments show - it will be pretty interesting.

And if they manage - accidentally, of course - to create mini black holes, well that'll be pretty neat too. (Obviously that probably isn't what I'd be thinking as I was being sucked into oblivion, but hey.)

As far as I understand it, even when they switch the thing on tomorrow, it won't actually do anything - just run a few set up programmes. You know, like Windows starting up...

Be a laugh if all they got was a blue screen...

Apparently, when the London Stock Exchange crashed yesterday, they didn't know what to do; so they switched it off, and switched it back on again.

Yeah, first collision is due Saturday I think, not that it matters. The scare mongering idiots can be placated tomorrow, then we can have an end-of-the-world party on Saturday.

The bit about the LSE sounds about right, but then, that's normally my first response to any IT problem.
