yea, there are places in the counrty that have dig-sites. one can pay $10 for a bucket of blasted rock and through it one sifts and washes in hopes to find precious jewels, some worth more than gold by weight.
there are many things that can make it shitty, but just as any treasure hunting works, timing is key. you can't expect to find anything if you go for one random day and dig out leftover rocks. id camp there for a few days with a small seismometer. wait until they blast a new cravace of minerals. during the few days you could gather information of probable advantage through evesdropping and experienced miners. select a bucket of fresh-mined rock. if they blasted out new matter, they haven't had a good haul in a while and are desparate to have someone find something. they can let people dig for days and not find anything, or they can have someone find something and set example for the dreams of wealth through spelunking for tresa. idk ive never been mining, but i know its all patience. i just have to be that example kid they use to fuel the digging flames.
