Honestly, one of my big motivations for moving to back to NM in the spring is that I don't think I can afford an apartment to myself in the Bay Area, and I know I can find at least a not too sketchy studio I can afford in Albuquerque. SAVING MONEY =/= WORTH ANOTHER YEAR OF ROOMMATE ROULETTE.
After four months of living together, we've just about got our schedules lined up to the point that we are only in the apartment at the same time when we're both asleep or she is drunk. It does mean I go weeks without actually seeing her, but most of our encounters are rather like this. :\
Oh god, I remember that. It sounded like such a miserable situation for you to be in. Man, there is no incentive in the world that would make me willing to go back to a one-room double.
You know, I lived with roommies all my other years except this one (since I'm an RA), and it's been fine since I picked my roommates myself (well, actually not junior year, since I came back from abroad, but it was awesome anyway). My freshman year roommate just happened to be not good.
I do think picking your roommates makes a big difference - I've roomed with a total stranger every year, and I don't have the greatest luck with landing with people I'm that compatible with. And I think I'm just very, uh...territorial? Even though I got along with Freshman Roomie last year, after awhile it just started to grate on me how little control I had over anything - whether or not the lights were going to be on, how much noise there was, whether I was going to be by myself. This year is actually much better in that I have my own space, even if my roommate is occasionally irritating.
I'm glad it's worked out better for you, though! Having roommates you get along with is definitely a good thing. :)

And hah, my freshman year roommate totally had sex in the room while I was there, too.
