I wonder what fear smells like...

Do you think it'd be socially acceptable to run up to little kids, kidnap them, lock them in my basement for several days while I run a chainsaw upstairs and stomp around, then sniff them to see what their fear smells like?

Actually there was a test to do just that, except instead of kidnapping and chainsaws a bungie chord was used.

That's more controlled fear than actual fear. Bungie jumping is more anxiety than fear, and the odds of you dying are really quite low.
